Department of Emergency Medicine Recognized at NAEMSP Conference

National Association of EMS Physicians
(NAEMSP)

2012 Keith Neely Outstanding
Contribution to EMS Award

This award is presented to an active or past member of NAEMSP who has provided significant leadership to the association.   Dr. Menegazzi’s award specifically noted his “Contribution to EMS through Scientific Inquiry and Leadership”.

Dr. Menegazzi’s research team also won the NAEMSP “Best Cardiac Arrest Presentation” for their study titled, “Pre-shock Pause Intervals and Rearrest After Resuscitation from Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest”.  He presented the paper on behalf of his co-investigators Allison C. Koller and David D. Salcido, MPH.  The study examined the relationship between the pauses that occur when chest compressions are stopped before a rescue shock (defibrillation attempt) is delivered and the outcomes of patients who have had a pulse restored in the prehospital phase of their care.  Rearrest occurs in nearly 40% of patients who get a pulse back, and patients who have a rearrest event tend to do more poorly than those who do not.  The group continues to study this phenomenon with the support of a grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of NIH.
