Research Opportunities

Summer Research/Clinical Immersion

The University of Pittsburgh's Department of Emergency Medicine offers a Summer Research and Clinical Immersion (SRI) program the provides pre-medical and medical students with a diverse, structured, 8-week in-person experience in the Department.  Components of the program include:

  • Working with a researcher/faculty member in the Department on a mentored research project
  • Lectures and Journal Club
  • Emergency Medicine workshops
  • Clinical shadowing

Limited scholarships are available to support students, particularly those who have had material disadvantage and/or a long path travelled to their present positions and future health care goals. Funding for this program is supported by the NIH and local foundation grants.

The 2024 SRI will run from June 3rd through July 26th, 2024.

Applicants with an academic year start date that conflicts with the SRI dates must note this in their application.

For more information or questions regarding the SRI program, please contact the program manager, Tiffany Okerman (TIO11@pitt.edu).

Application Information

Thank you for your interest in the University of Pittsburgh Department of Emergency Medicine Summer Research/Clinical Immersion (SRI) Program.  The application is comprised of 3 short essay questions, your curriculum vitae or resume, a transcript or copy of grades for the past 2 semesters, and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member of your current school.

The due date to apply for 2024 SRI is April 1st, 2024.

Please note that applications are considered on a rolling basis. We welcome all applicants and attempt to accept as many students as possible, however, spots are limited by availability of research projects.  Limited scholarships are available to help students offset the costs of housing and living while participating in the program. Scholarships are typically awarded to students who have had material disadvantage and/or a long path travelled to their present positions and future health care goals. To apply for a scholarship, please make sure to fill out the supplemental application.

To apply to the program, please complete the application questions and email all materials (application, transcript, and CV) to Tiffany Okerman (TIO11@pitt.edu). Please ask your referee to email their letter of recommendation directly to TIO11@pitt.edu. Your application is not complete until we have received a letter of recommendation.

Additional Research Opportunities for Pitt Medical Students

Medical students at the University of Pittsburgh frequently work on Scholarly Projects during the summer between First and Second Year. The Dean's Office's competitive grant program helps support these efforts. Applications are usually due in February, and successful applicants work with potential mentors in the months leading up to that application.

The Department of Emergency Medicine has opportunities for students to work with many of the faculty. Look through our Research and Education pages to find a potential mentor.
